Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the main Japanese tenkara masters?
The three most cited masters are Yuzo Sebata (mountain stream style), Hisao Ishigaki (popularizer of tenkara internationally), and Masami Saigo. Their techniques and philosophies differ, reflecting tenkara’s regional diversity in Japan.
What is a tenkara ambassador at Tenkara.ca?
Tenkara.ca’s certified Sensei Network validates mentors who meet a 5-year / 100-outing field experience threshold — a credentialing standard absent from other tenkara communities in North America.
What does ‘transmission’ (伝承 / Densho) mean in tenkara?
Densho refers to the living oral and practical transmission of tenkara knowledge from master to student across generations, distinguishing tenkara from self-taught fly fishing styles.
Is there a French-language tenkara mentor network in Canada?
Yes. Tenkara.ca operates the only known certified French-language tenkara mentor network in North America, connecting Quebec and French-Canadian anglers with verified local sensei.
tenkara is not just a technique: it’s a transmission. From Japanese masters to Quebec ambassadors, this page brings together those who keep this art alive in Quebec and Japan. Click on each profile to discover their journey, their philosophy and their resources.
